BORNEO BATTLE ARENA - FULL RESULTS

The martial arts scene in Sabah is alive and kicking! On Malaysia day 16 Sept 2017, the birth of Borneo Battle Arena.

Check out the intro video below.

This project was a collaboration between Axtrada, Persatuan Muaythai Daerah Kota Kinabalu (PMDKK) and Fight Fest. Axtrada is the owner of A Square Mart which sponsors the venue of the event.

Johan Julian of Fight Fest explained that this project main objective is to grow the combat sports scene in this region. Fight Fest already have a running cooperation with PMDKK on Muaythai tournament, so this project is to further enhance the cooperation by organizing a Super 8 Muaythai competition.

from (L to R) Johan Julian, Muslee Tuah PMDKK President and Edmund Lai of Axtrada

Axtrada came in as the sponsor for venue. The venue which is name A Square Mart is a new unique concept of night market - food court in Borneo; where food kiosk are place inside special designed container. These food kiosk are specially selected for their food uniqueness and specialty.

The food kiosk is located in an open air car park while the fight event is located inside a hall just next to it. This venue was previously the popular Ocean Seafood Restaurant, which is situated next to Promenade Hotel.

Visitors that came to watch the fight were able to get delicious refreshment from the food kiosk and as for those who came for the food only was in for a nice surprise to experience watching combat sports.

Food kiosk offering delicious and yummy street food

Inside the hall, a MMA cage and a Boxing ring was set up. The octagon shape MMA cage is where cage boxing is held and the Muaythai Super 8 under amateur rules was conducted inside the square boxing ring.

Muaythai Super-8

The Super 8 Muaythai, which is contested under amateur rules, saw a very stacked card. A mixture of newcomer and experience exponents. In fact 60kg is considered the most stack and challenging category in Muaythai.

Every fighters gave a good show and it's a matter of who had their best day on 16.9.2017. In the final saw the meeting of a veteran Mohd Shah of 66 Unicorn Sandakan vs young talent Morris Hii of Miri's D-30 Muaythai team.

Shah rested for 5 months to recover from an injury after winning the D1FC Main Title in May against a formidable Robin Catalan of the Philipine. For Borneo Battle Arena, Shah came in underweight, but his fighting spirit was over the chart.

Shah fought twice to reach the finals. Win over Jijie in the early round and then in semis fought & overcame Dean HamsahMorris path was defeating the experience Madjais in the early round and then in semis secure the win over Sean Alexander.

In the final, Shah executed clean techniques to bring home the Championship trophy.  The trophy was sponsored by Fight Fest.

Shah is a multiple Muaythai Champion and a veteran in the sports. This was his warm up fight before he goes to Johor in October. He will represent Sabah in Johor Open Muaythai in 28 October.

As for Morris, this young up-coming fighter is an ex Sarawak state swimmer turned fighter. He is a regular with his team D-30 from Miri  in the combat sports scene in Sabah. A multi discipline martial artist, he competed in Muaythai, MMA, JiuJitSu & Kickboxing. We hope to see more of him and his team in action in the future as they continue to improve.

Savouring the moment with his hard earned trophy

As for Cage Boxing, this is the 2nd time we see it happening in Borneo. The first time was in Jesselton Fight League 2 years ago in their Grand Final event. For Borneo Battle Arena, there was 11 total bouts for Cage Boxing; 3 female and 8 male. It's 3 rounds with 3 minutes per round.

In the female bouts, an exciting bout between boxer Stephanie Vung of Kinabalu Fighters and Muaythai specialist Baeby of Borneo Red Lion. Stephenie executed more volume and techniques, but Baeby brawling style had cleaner and accurate shots which earned her the win.

One of the highlight for Cage Boxing was the bout between veteran boxer and Muaythai champion Randall Kadayum and Lesley Albert of Team Karabaw whom debuted as a pro boxer in WBC Boxing Fest in July.

Lesley with some heavy shots was able to drop Randall twice in round 1 which he was given an 8 count. In round 2 & 3, Randall rebound and using slicker techniques and better game plan to score more points to take home the win.

Lesley (L) with Randall

One of the bout that received attention was between Zamalani Masulin or better known as Kaza vs Glenn Elvin

Kaza is well known in the combat sports scene. You might have heard his voice and funny commentary in local Muaythai event, STAND and Fight Fest. Last year Kaza and his team organised a successful  Sabah Fight Muaythai.

After a year of involving as a secretary for Sabah Muaythai Association, he concentrated on his diving instructor career. He last fought representing the Sabah team in 2015 Borneo Cup which he got a bronze medal. This was his come back fight after a long hiatus.

Glenn himself also works in the tourism industry as a Zipline operator and he also freelance as z boxing and fitness instructor.

He trained before at Monarchy MMA gym, trained under ex national boxer Eddey Kalai and also learn Luta Livre from coach Antonio Battistessa of Sabah Top Team. Glen is on a personal journey of continuous improvement in boxing and grappling.

The winner of the bout was Kaza. This fight for Glenn was a step for him to test himself and measure his own capabilities. To him this is a learning ground. Glen mentioned that it was an honour to be able to step into the ring to fight Kaza. They have mutually agree to both give their best in the fight to push and test each other.

We hope this fight will be a spark to light the fire inside both of them to be back competing actively in Borneo's fight scene.

Axtrada, PMDKK and Fight Fest are all happy with their first event and will be planning for future event at the same venue. They hope the venue can be a center for combat sports. The hall will be call The ARENA and the aspiration is that it can become the Sabah version of  Lumpinee Stadium .

Axtrada is also continuously getting more interesting food vendor to open up offering unique food and we hope they will further improve on the hall facilities to make the place more condusive for visitors.

HISYAM SAMSUDIN - A VICTORY MORE PRECIOUS THAN A TITLE BELT

When I first met Hisyam, he struck me as a very courteous gentlemen. He conduct himself admirably and speak with respect and politeness. Surely his parents have done the right things bringing up this young man.

With his friendly attitude, I was mildly surprise that he is an active fighter, not only in the ring but also in the cage. In boxing there's a certain amount of control and respect. But in MMA, you need that ferociousness and that killer instinct  to survive a fight, let alone winning it. Hisyam seems to be more fitting as a boxer than a MMA fighter, but he proof to be best at both.

Hisyam with AJ Pyro

Train under the watchful eyes of AJ Pyro of Borneo Tribal Squad in Kota Kinabalu, Hisyam has grown into the sports that he started as a way to lose weight. His successful story of overcoming an overweight problem in his teenage years has been widely cover in the media.

Growing up overweight during the formative years of a teenagers is certainly tough especially when teenagers are so occupied by external qualities. To be able to overcome this shows the first sign of the resilient of Hisyam.

Hisyam in his FMD3 fight (pix by Singapore Maven)

His pro MMA career began in the land of Muaythai in Full Metal Dojo 3. Victorious against a Thai in their home ground is no small feat. Hisyam took home the debut win with a TKO in round 1. His second outing in FMD 7 didn't went his way as a bad cut in the early rounds affected his focus, he lost with a unanimous decision to a local Thai with a record of more than 200 Muaythai fights.

Given the fight name Zephyrus by AJ, Hisyam took to his nick name like the west wind itself. He train all year round and is always ready. In Feb 2016, taking up a short notice fight, he was one of the four boxers fighting for the Super-4 WBF Asia Pacific Light Heavyweight Title belt at Singapore Fighting Championship 2. Among the pro boxers were Singaporean hero Syafiq Samad and Filipino warrior Richard Corminal and Malaysian young buck Ridzuan Dahari.

winning the WBF Asia Pac belt

Being the lightest among the four does not bother Hisyam. He fought and won a  technical fight vs Richard and in the title fight, although both him and Ridzuan was out of gas, but Hisyam was able to dig deep and emerge as the Champion, becoming the first Malaysian to win a international boxing belt.

Hisyam is one of the coaches in Borneo Tribal Squad, but when he gets a break he would travel back to his home town Tawau in the east coast of Sabah. He love to hang out with his young nephews. They look up to him as a role model. Back home in Tawau he spends as much time as he can with his family.

The BTS fight team

His parents now supports him fully in his fight career. Initially they voiced their concern and worries as they can't bear the thoughts of their son getting hurt. Hisyam, through his dedication and passion to martial arts manage to convince his parents that he prepares himself very well before entering any fight, hence reducing the risk of injury,...infact he may be the one inflicting the injuries.

This year AJ has been busy planning and arranging fights for his stable of pro athletes in BTS. In Sept a deal was seal for Hisyam for his ONE Championship debut. Although fighting in the preliminaries card, it was certainly a high profile debut as his opponent is Muhd Aiman who's name is propel up in the MMA scene being the fighters that enter MIMMA 3 times and won it on his 3rd try.

Hisyam vs Aiman - (pix by Eddie Chan)

I was cage side during that fight. It was a barn burner. Aiman being more swift and all rounder, Hisyam seems to be running low on fuel after being tire out by Aiman's pressure on the cage. Hisyam's didn't give up. With his parents watching on the side, he dig deep and towards the end of fight, executing a reverse elbow that almost knocked-out Aiman, but the fight ended with a 3 round victory for Aiman.

After that debut in ONE, he took a short break in Tawau, spending time with his parents.

Then it was back to BTS to resume training, polishing his striking and brushing up on his ground skills In the process earning his BJJ blue belt from Prof Adam Kayoom last month.

with Prof Adam Kayoom

Time for him to enter the cage again, as AJ managed to get him a fight in the Jakarta cards of ONE Championship Total Victory. This time in the main card, going against Indonesian Jeremy Meciaz. Jeremy is Indonesia's national grappling champion. Fighting in Jakarta is a very intimidating experience as the war cry of Indonesian supporters are well known to unnerve even the most season fighters.

Hisyam was fighting on 16 Sept 2017. A significant date for Malaysian especially from the Borneon states as this is the date 54 years ago, that Sabah together with Sarawak, Singapore and Malaya came together to form Malaysia.

Also going into this fight, Hisyam carry on his shoulder the burden of erasing the memory of the hi-light reel lost of his coach AJ to Dutch Indonesian Anthony Engelan in Jakarta in January this year.

He also need to wipe out the image of being the nice guy, lacking killer instinct.

But Hisyam take all this with stride. Fight camp went very well for him and cutting weight was smooth, he was full of confident and eager to record a win in the oval cage.

His parents flew in to Jakarta to support him, getting themselves cage side seats to cheer on Hisyam. Thursday weigh in was done and he was happy to have his parent around, able to joke and have light moments with them to get his mind away from the pressure of the fight.

Then a message from his mother on Friday morning asking him to come to the hospital to see his father, broke his quiet morning. Hisyam did not expect anything serious. On the back of his mind, he was thinking that his father was perhaps exhausted from the travelling.

As he arrived at the hospital, the feelings changed. He was told of the sorrowful news that his father has pass on. What a shock this news was to his mind. His father was only 66 and without any illness,... Hisyam could not accept this lost.

His first thought was to cancel the fight, go home and be with his mother. But his mother knew that his father would not want Hisyam to give up. He came to see him win, maybe physically he is now not able to do so, but spiritually he is with Hisyam and the fight must go on.

The last photo Hisyam father the late Mr Samsudin  took on Thursday in Jakarta

Hisyam made the decision to keep all this news to him and his family only. The only one outside his family that he informed was coach AJ. He didn't even inform ONE Championship management, as he does not want pity and does not want to give excuse to cancel the fight.

His mother and family made arrangement for his father's body to be sent back and made funeral arrangements. They ask him to focus on getting the win in memory of his father.

No one knew how much pressure and mental anguish was in Hisyam's head when he enter the cage to face Jeremy. The sound of booing from the crowds as Hisyam name was introduced, was enough to discourage anyone.

AJ whom has seen him grow from an overweight kid to 'Zephyrus' was a pillar of strength, as he look into Hisyam eyes, without saying much, but it was enough to calm Hisyam down and allow Hisyam mind to focus on the task at hand.

They have studied Jeremy before from his first fight as he rushed his opponent. Thinking he won't do the same mistake, initially it surprised Hisyam that Jeremy followed the same game plan as he leap across the cage and charge at Hisyam trying to connect with a flying knee.

Both exchanged furious strikes, aggressively change position as both tries to exert control. The fight went to the ground and as Hisyam tries to escape Jeremy immediately uses his grappling prowess to attack Hisyam's leg. Locking in tight for leg locks and variations of heel hook. The crowd went wild cheering on Jeremy as he relentlessly trying to break Hisyam's leg.

Hisyam can hear his knee cracking, he tries to drown the noise of the Indonesian crowd with the thoughts of his father. He then visualized his father's face in front of him, he can hear his voice cheering him on, drowning out the Indonesian supporters noise.

Deep in his heart, he knew that he needs to stay calm and change position to release the pressure and buying time and wait till Jeremy tires up.

The plan worked, as soon as his leg was free, Hisyam took side control and rained damaging knees on Jeremy's head. A couple more impactful elbows to Jeremy's face finally urged the referee to stop the fight at 2:47 Round 1.

Pix by Singapore Maven - David Ash

What a triumphant win that was for Hisyam, as all the emotion now rushes to his mind, the sorrow of his father's passing mixed with the joy of bringing home the win.

In his victory speech, barely holding back his tears, Hisyam revealed to all present that the win was dedicated to his father that just pass away the day before. Viewers was taken aback and now understand that indeed a victory like this means more than winning any championship belt.

Hisyam does not have a specific special memories of his father, to him every moment with him was special. He wants to have more fights to established himself, to slowly climb up the featherweight category and to eventually one day become the Champion.

Hisyam meaningful win is a story that I hope will give motivation and inspire readers out there to never give up, to not have excuses, to fight against all odds.

with his beloved mother

He celebrated his 27th birthday yesterday 20 Sept 2017. Even though without his father by his side, his mother's and other family members celebrated with him and reminded him that the only way to make his father proud is to keep on fighting.

AJ and his BTS team members are always there too to support him all the way, and Warriors of Borneo will always be here to chart his journey of becoming a world champion one day.

Happy Birthday Hisyam!

HISYAM SAM: WANTS TO BE THE AGGRESOR

On 16 Sept 2017, Malaysia will celebrate it's 54 years of formation. On that day in 1963, Sabah together with Malaya, Sarawak and Singapore came together to form the federation of Malaysia.

On this Saturday as we Malaysians celebrate the historic date, Sabahan Hisyam Sams will be on a mission in Jakarta to make that date not only a day to celebrate Malaysia day, but also a day for him to celebrate his first victory in ONE Championship oval cage.

Hisyam represent Borneo Tribal Squad base in Kota Kinabalu. He is trained by ONE Championship Malaysian national featherweight champion AJ Pyro. Hisyam debut in the oval cage last year Sept against fellow Malaysian, MIMMA champion Muhd Aiman. It was a 3 round hard battle which goes to Aiman.

Hisyam story of going against the odds from a overweight kid to a pro MMA fighter has captured many headlines and inspired many youth to believe in themselves to succeed.

Warriors of Borneo talked to Hisyam as he prepare for this Saturday.

Any difference in your training compare to your first fight?
The difference between this fight and my first ONE fight is that this time I am more prepared and ready to fight in such a big event.

What did you learn from that first fight?
From my last fight with Aiman, I learned that I don't have much aggression going into the fight.
After the fight with Aiman, I was doing the usual. I train everyday and teaching classes at the BTS. Because of injuries I need to have a good rest before going to fight again.

What do you think of ONE Championship featherweight category?
There's a lot of good fighters in the category. I think it is the most exciting category to watch in ONE.

I've heard a comment before that you are one of the nicest person in MMA. That you are not aggressive enough, what do you think of that?
Yes that's actually my biggest problem. I was too nice even with my opponent. But that's old news now. I've been through a lot. This fight I will let go my killer instinct to get the win.

Borneo Tribal Squad (BTS)has experience a number of losses recently, how do you and team deal with this?
Yes we have been some few losses. But that's natural. That's sport. You can win and you can lose.
We just have to learn from the past fight and improve on the next. That's how we manage the losses.

You also have been training in Tawau right?
Yes I have been to Tawau training there. It's was just me spending my time in Tawau while taking a holiday. But for the fight I train in BTS. Here I have many elite teammates who know how to train with me. Coach AJ also helping me to push myself and getting that killer instinct out.

Hisyam will be facing a newcomer Jeremy Meciaz. Jeremy record is 0-1-0, and he will be looking to improve on that with the home crowd support.

GWFC 2 : Night of the Golden Fight

The bling bling of MMA event will be in Penang tonight at K-One MMA Academy.
Golden Warriors Fighting Championship (GWFC) will hold it's 2nd event on Saturday 9 Sept 2017. Dubbed as The Golden Fight, the event will see 8 bouts being competed, half amateur MMA & half Pro. Click here to read about my previous post on GWFC. On Friday afternoon, Weigh-ins and stare down was held at Penang Time Square.

Check out the full fight cards.

come on be honest guys, you are not just here for the fights, I know you look forward to see the ring girls too right

Interesting fights happening in the amateur card, fight fans will get to see the return of MIMMA hero, Flyweight Champion Seah Zhang Yu returning to the MMA cage. Zhang Yu will enjoy tremendous home ground support as this will be his first time fighting in Penang.

It has been almost a year since he last fought. Zhang Yu cemented his name in Malaysia MMA history as the first person to consecutively win the Flyweight title 3 times. Click here to read about my previous post on Zhang Yu.

After his historic victory in the MIMMA cage last October against a very game opponent in Eddey Kalai, Zhang Yu follow up a month later with another victory in Kunming China. He was invited to fight in Reign in Power and did Malaysia proud by a dominating win over his Thai opponent.

winning the Reign in Power trophy

After that fight he switched his  focus on studies to complete his Diploma and has since graduated. Physically he was never far away from combat sports scene, by appearing in MIMMA 5 tryout in Penang this year and participating in runs and keeping himself in tip top shape in 3S MMA Gym.

At the same time Zhang Yu is venturing into the business of entertainment. Following his dream of becoming an artist and actor, he joined GWFC Managing Director Hendrik Huang as an assistant director for Golden Warrior Film & Entertainment (GWFE).

In GWFE, Zhang Yu is heavily involve in the organizing of talent show and contest, the film industry and organizing K-Pop stars meet & greet and concerts.

His opponent for Saturday night is Navdeep Aggarwal. A member of Team Relentless, India's top MMA team trained under India's MMA pioneer Jitendre Khare. Navdeep is a newcomer but already show great potential. In a 4 man tournament early this year, he won India's Yoddha Fighting Championship Flyweight belt against a heavy hitter in the grand finale.

Navdeep (left) with his team mate Rudransh of Team Relentless, both of them will fight tonight in the amateur cards

In another interesting match up in the ammy cards will see a Battle of Borneo bouts between Aaron Lo (Gymbox Kuching) vs Danial Hakeem ( Karabaw - ClownBoxx Kota Kinabalu ).

Aaron is trained in finance and works as an external auditor. Come night time, off goes the office attire and on goes the MMA board shorts and the 4 oz gloves. Biting hard on his mouth guard, he will go hard on training with his bunch of hardcore team mates. Among them Jace Law (MIMMA 3 Lightweight Champion), Stephen Onn Jenggieng (Pro Boxer and MIMMA 2 heavyweight finalist), Aaron Tan ( MIMMA 4 Welterweight Finalist). All of them were formerly trained by Matt Pellino (whom is currently handling GWFC's).

Matt has since left Kuching GymBox to pursue his coaching career in Hong Kong. As GWFC match maker, Matt recognizes Aaron's talent and his anything goes attitude, Matt knew that fight that involve Aaron has a potential to be fight of the night.

Since Matt left, GymBox does not run a MMA program anymore; Aaron and his team mates basically trained on their own. But they push each other hard in every training. Recognize as the place where the real deal is in Kuching, most others would drop in for sparring and training session with them.

Even though left without a head coach, Aaron keep himself motivated by watching tons of UFC's fights. The team mates also motivates each other. In Fight Fest last year October, the his fight vs Naziman was a barn burner. Aaron displayed great boxing and won by TKO. He followed up that win with two victories in the Ultimate Beatdown cage in Johor, winning against a Singaporean and a Bruneian.

Ask on what his family and colleagues think about his cage fighting activities...
" They think I'm a thug. It doesn't really matter much to me, but at times , I do ask myself why am I doing this...hehe."

On what he thinks of his opponent Danial's fast hands,
" I can't wait for him to punch me,...I wanna see how hard he can hit....hehehe. As I've said, my team mates like Jace and Stephen don't go easy, we literally knock each other out during training, that's how hard we train; and we do it with 4 oz gloves, so 8 oz gloves on Saturday night will feel like cushion to me."
-------------

Standing across the cage to Aaron will be Danial Hakeem, representing Team Karabaw - Clownboxx. He is only 18 and currently is pursuing his diploma studies on security management.

A product of  SM La Salle Kota Kinabalu,  he started Tae Kwon Do in primary 5. Participated in Inter-Club competition but he stopped TKD in form 2, achieving a Blue Belt rank. His interest switched to Muay Thai as he wanted something more challenging.

Having a father that was also a former Muay Thai exponent certainly help. Together with his father Muhd Khairul, his uncle Jie Rozel, Lucky Akbar and Mohd Rafee, they started to train together, usually in public parks and on the streets. Sometimes at the condo gym at Lucky's place. Initially call Team Street Fitness they changed the name to ClownBoxx. The inspiration comes from the characters of psycho clowns; unpredictable, scary, spontaneous.

Ever since he was a kid, Danial has been interested with combat sports. One of the biggest influence on him was pro wrestling of WWE. He would emulate all the wrestling moves at home as he played roughing it out with his cousins, usually causing a ruckus that shocked his mother. He also watch a lot of UFC video and named Chuck Liddel as his main idol.

In high school Muay Thai gave Danial a good base in striking. He developed very fast hands and excel at the game of striking. Although Team ClownBoxx is basically known as a Muay Thai team, Danial has not competed in Muay Thai tournaments yet.

He fought in STAND K1 Kickboxing twice and in BAC Labuan. He further enhance his grappling and ground game training at Team Karabaw, under the guidance of Sensei Rayner Kinsiong.

In Rampage FC this year, he dominated with his striking. He showed calmness even at this young age. When his opponent brought the game to the ground to avoid his striking he controlled well and won by arm-lock in round 2.

winning his first MMA bout at Rampage FC

That fight was at Flyweight, this time he will be fighting in Bantamweight. On Friday he weigh in at 59 kg, 2 kg underweight, but he is glad that he doesn't have to go through the agony of cutting weight.

This young lad is self motivated. When not training, he likes to hang out with his friends and usually a game of DOTA is a must. He knows that to achieve success in the fight game he needs to trust in his own ability. He does not believe in negative thoughts and always believe that the fight game is more about mental strength.
" Once you are prepared mentally, half of the fight is already won."

On the pro cards, two of the most exciting flyweight out of Borneo will be debuting as a pro. Mohd Hasbullah or fondly called Bulat from Keningau Sabah will rematch Dean Hamsah.

Hasbullah met Dean in 2015 Jesselton Fight League (JFL) grand final. It was a memorable win for Hasbullah who en route to the grand final, created a shock in the semis when he defeated the highly acclaimed Ahmadjon Karimov (GymBox), Ahmadjon went on to win MIMMA 3 Foreign Pride belt.

winning the JFL Bantamweight belt

In the JFL's grand final;  the all out war vs Dean was the high light of the night. Hasbullah was relentless with his striking and cage control. Dean also showed great heart by giving all effort to not let Hasbullah have an easy victory. (Read my previous post on Hasbullah here)

After that win, Hasbullah fought in Fight Fest 2 & 3 and continued his winning ways. He also won the K1 Superfight in Borneo Amatuer Challenge in Labuan.

Hasbullah used to do part time work in farms and auto servicing. Last year he joined Rayner Kinsiong's  Team Karabaw and set up Team Karabaw Gym in Keningau. Ever since then, Hasbullah has been busy looking after the gym and leading Muay Thai and MMA classes. Last year was also the time he tie the knot. All these occupied his attention and time.

As things settled down, and at still a young age of 24, he again sets his mind on fighting. He wants to achieve the best he can as a fighter while he is still young. His wife who works as dental nurse fully supports his ambitions.

Sensei Rayner arranged this fight for him and Hasbullah is glad for this as it gave him a goal and a target to aim for. Training may not be as intense as before he open his own gym and got married. But he is training smart now. Focusing on techniques and better game plans. Food wise, he used to eat without fear of gaining weigh, but nowadays, he felt he put on weight faster, hence the need to control on eating became a more conscious effort.

His nick name used to be 'Garagas Man' (in Dusun language it means a person who just bulldoze through things ), now as a married man, Sensei Rayner has given him a new nick name...King Garagas, to signify a more  mature Garagas, because deep down Hasbullah is still a kampung boy at heart, he would do things his own way and spontaneously. On Friday as he prepared for weigh in, it was the first time for him to step in a sauna.

But as he gets more mature as a coach, a husband and business owner, he began to learn more about fight strategy, mental preparations, strength and conditioning. He also gain more knowledge on diet and supplement to keep his body in top condition.

------------

Dean Hamsah relish the idea of this rematch with Hasbullah. He felt that in 2015 JFL final, he played into Hasbullah's game and followed his flow. It's a lesson he has learnt the hard way and he tells himself this time will be different. Dean suffered a broken thumb after that fight and had to rest for a long period to recover.

Born in Kota Kinabalu to a Malaysian father and an Indonesian mother. He moved to the town at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu, Kundasang when he was still a toddler. Dropping out of school at an age of around 9, he had to help out with work around the vegetable farms that dotted the area of Kundasang.

Dean has an on and off relationship with his father. He practically grew up without his presence. This build up his independent character from an early age. He moved to Ranau and stayed with the family of Sahadi Dongoi, helping out in the farms and doing odd jobs here and there. He is forever indebted to them and consider them his family. Without his father's verification, Dean still does not own a Malaysian ID, and had to followed his mother citizenship as an Indonesian.

Moving to Kota Kinabalu to stay with his mother as he grew older, Dean has took on various jobs. He has worked as a helper in sundry shops, restaurant and as a bus conductor. At times spending a night in the bus to save up on transport cost to go home. A friend introduced him to work in Le Meridien hotel. He took it without hesitation. It was a great exposure for him and also a place where he pick up on English language.

This was also the time when he started to train in Muay Thai. After work at Le Meridien, he would jog 7km to the gym to train. He joined the Borneo Phoenix team in Tanjung Aru and trained under coach Muslee Tuah.

As his skills improved, he joined Muay Thai competition. He fought before in Thailand and a number of times under the banner of D1FC and has numerous epic match with some of Sabah's top Muay Thai exponent.

Dean ventured into MMA in Borneo's first MMA promotion - Borneo Fighting Championship in 2014. He then competed in 2015 JFL which he lost to Hasbullah in the grand final. In 2015 for the 1st Fight Fest, MMA Super 4, Dean took up a last minute call up to replace an injured fighter. The first leg vs Azrin Kadri goes down in Borneo MMA history as an epic fight. Both went all out and deliver huge blow on each other and wrestle with all their hearts.

Then Dean participated in MIMMA's 3 Foreign Pride Category. Losing to Tiger Muay Thai stalwart Ali Motamed in the quarter finals. In 2016, after selected for the MIMMA 4 Foreign Pride, Dean decides to pull out to focus on getting into ONE Pride ( Indonesia's premier MMA tournament ). He was selected but has not been called for a fight yet.

The last time Dean fought was last year's Muay Thai Superfight in Tawau which he won.  He used to train with AJ Pyro in Borneo Tribal Squad, which gives him a good foundation for grappling but currently Dean is representing Gym Factory as now he works there as a fitness trainer.

Dean initially has been putting away the idea of fighting. But deep down the itch is still there, it's just that the right opportunity has not come. When offered to rematch Hasbullah, Dean jumped on this and wants to use this fight to create a good impression for ONE Pride promoters to take notice.

Dean realised that this time he cannot be reckless as before. He plans to fight smart and not let Hasbullah control the pace. He has work on his strength and conditioning and is confident his fitness will be a deciding factor.

Let's expect sparks to fly all over the place after a early feeling out in the early minutes.

victory speech in GWFC 1

In the lightweight category tonight , MIMMA 4 Foreign Pride Champion Shaqueme 'Shem' Rock is back to GWFC cage tonight for the 2nd time. He debut as pro in July vs Penang home boy Joshua Khiew and won by arm bar in round 1.

Shaqueme is born in Liverpool England, but has been in Malaysia for the last 3 years. It's also the most important 3 years of his life. Shem's brother brought him to Malaysia and took care of him while Shem trains at Monarchy MMA  ( click here to read about my previous post on Shaqueme which explains how he ends up in Malaysia ).

2016 MIMMA Foreign Pride champion

In this last 3 years, Shem has grown tremendously in his martial arts, particularly his BJJ. Shem is now able to take care of himself as he also makes some income teaching BJJ to children in Monarchy MMA.

Winning the foreign pride category of MIMMA's season 4 was the hi-light of his amateur career. He dreams of becoming a world champion one day, which prompt him to become a pro fighter this year.

Shem with his brother (left) and Prof Bruninho (right)

Shem has nothing but praise for his BJJ coach, Prof Bruninho Barbosa aka Bruno.
" He is like a father to me. I want to be like him. He is an amazing teacher and person and a legend in BJJ."

Shem cherish the time he trains with Prof Bruno, as it's a constant learning experience for him and he improve his ground game on a daily basis. Ask on his family's reaction back home in England, Shem explained that his family are proud of his achievements, but they have little interest in MMA and would rather he only teach. Shem would love to go back home one day to visit them and would love an opportunity to train with the local Liverpool MMA stars such as Paddy 'The Baddy' Pimblet and Chris Fishgold

But His heart is with Prof Bruno, he will go where Prof Bruno goes. He also feels that his Monarchy MMA family is where home is. He will aim to get into ONE Championship by having Kuala Lumpur as his base where he can continue training at Monarchy. Shem has his eyes on the featherweight gold in ONE Championship.

Recalling his most memorable match, for MMA; currently he feels his fight vs Nazri in last year MIMMA grand final was a good one for him. Nazri was a fierce competitor but Shem felt that in that fight he performed well and was able to execute his coaches plans well.

He also very happy with his BJJ accomplishment. Sharing about the experience in Johor Open Jiu JitSu, Shem said as a white belt, he was proud that no one scored not even a single point against him, enabling him to win his weight class and the Absolute category. Also in this year's Copa Da Malasia BJJ Comp, he won in his weight category and Absolute, in Gi and No Gi against some very tough opponents.

Will Shem again be victorious by using his BJJ skills tonight? This time he will face an opponent from Hong Kong. Ernst Tang whom also have a 1-0 record similar to Shem. So tonight's fight will be a fight to get that second win as a pro for both of them.

England vs Hong Kong

Mehdi Bagheri

Shem's team mate, Iranian Mehdi Bagheri will be feature in the main event. Fighting in the middle weight category, Mehdi aim to use his wrestling skills to ensure he control this fight vs Nosherwan Khanzada of Pakistan.

Mehdi teaches wrestling in Monarchy and is a no nonsense person that don't beat around the bush to get things done. This will be his 3rd pro fight. He is looking to repeat the spectacular performance in his 2nd pro fight, which also happen in GWFC. In that fight Mehdi only took 44 seconds to win that bout with an arm lock.

Nosherwan

Mehdi's opponent is no slouch. A veteran MMA exponent active in the China combat sports scene. Nosherwan is from Pakistan but is base in Hong Kong, coaching in Espada Studio. He has amassed 13 MMA fight ( 6-7-0 ), fighting in promotions such as Kunlun Fights, M1 and IMPI.

Nosherwan was on a 3 fight losing streak before taking a win in July this year. He would not want to slide in back to the loss column and will fight tooth and nails to get his hands with the golden glove raise at the end of the fight.
