Joanna Yap - MIMMA 1st female MMA Champion

Joanna Yap from Kuching created history on 10 OCT 2015, when she became the 1st Female MMA Champion of MIMMA. MIMMA decided to introduce two new category in season 3, the Foreign Pride & Female category. This was a very smart decision as many Malaysian women are taking up martial arts and has cross train in various discipline, enabling them to compete in MMA. Style wise in Season 2, we saw the dominance of BJJ ( Brazilian JiuJitsu ) as both Grand Finalist , Joanna and Felicia Yunus ( from Sabah ) are BJJ specialist.

Backstage, before both  fighters enter the cage

Joanna qualified for the Grand Finals after collecting 3 wins. In the Grand Finals fight, both finalist went all out. Joanna was more dominance in her cage control. Joanna's owe her ground game skills to Coach Albert Lim of Studio 23, Kuching. Going the full 5 rounds certainly show how great the endurance of both fighters was. Joanna emerge champion by getting the unanimous decision.

CEO of Tune Talk , Jason Lo, sharing his joy of Joanna's victory as he is also from Kuching

The interview below was done after Joanna's win last year. It was always a great pleasure to interview Joanna as her career as a journalist with The Borneo Post really shines in the choice of words she uses and the amount of information she gives; which helps in my blog's objective of promoting local MMA talent, so the more infor from the interviewee, the better readers can know about them.

I hope with the interview below, reader's ( especially those trying out for MIMMA 4 today at Kuching ) can be motivated and learn from Joanna's experience and preservere and hope to see more champion emerge from Sarawak. You can also learn more about Joanna in my pre - MIMMA3 Grand Final story on her, click here

Tell me about the fight vs Felicia. You control her at the cage, striking time the flurry seems to caught you a few times, but you remain strong, tell me how does it feel at that moment?
Felicia landed a number of good strikes, but in the heat of the fight and with adrenaline running, I didn't feel much of the impact (I had a black eye the day after though!).

Throughout the fight, my mind was just focused on implementing our strategy. She had great grappling defense and she didn't always let me do what I wanted to do. There were times Felicia had the upper hand, and at other times, I had the upper hand. However, in the last couple of rounds, I felt I had more success in imposing our game plan.

Is there a point in the fight that you think you need to change game plan or stick to it?
The fight was more or less going the way my team anticipated it might, so there wasn't any real need to change. As the fight progressed, there were certain things I needed to pay more attention to like keeping my defense up, and my team made sure to highlight them in between rounds. I tried to do my best to follow their advice.

Were you confident of having your hand raise when waiting for the annoucement by Jon Nutt?
At the end of the fight, I felt Felicia and I both had a 50-50 chance of winning. It was a pleasant surprise when it was announced the judges had awarded us the unanimous decision, as I thought it could have a been a split decision that could have gone either way.

After the fight, how did you celebrate your win?
By eating! It's the Malaysian way. I had a crazy bunch of ex-classmates who flew over from Kuching and Singapore to KL for the fight, while others who were working in KL and other parts of West Malaysia also came to watch. My mom came over to watch too. So after the fight was over, we met up at the Subway outlet just outside the stadium to eat, catch up and take photos as that was my only opportunity to see some of them before they returned back to where they came from.

You have build a rather close relationship with Felicia and also fellow fighters Gladys Molling, tell me more .
We definitely share a unique friendship because of the experiences we have gone through – not just as the first batch of female fighters in MIMMA 3, but also individually as female competitors in combat sports where women are often the minority. I think that's what helps us to click quite fast with each other because we have gone through similar experiences.

I was very happy when they both decided to visit the studio ( Studio 23 ) when they were in Kuching recently. It was great to be able to spend time with both of them. They are women I look up to because of their skills, positive outlook on life, strong fighting spirit, and passion for their martial arts. I hope to be able to return the favour and visit them in their home gyms to train with them one day.

How does your colleagues and bosses treats u after becoming MIMMA's 1st Female Champion?
Not much difference, to be honest. They congratulated me and then it was back to work for all of us, haha. Journalists and editors have seen and gone through many things in their line of work so it takes a lot to get a reaction out of them. I brought the belt to the office to show a couple of my colleagues and they had some fun taking photos with it. Other than that, it's business as usual.

Do you think MIMMA4 should stick to just one female category?
It would be nice if at least one more weight class could be opened to cater to the lighter weights. Another option is to split the current catchweight into additional weight classes. The MIMMA 3 female competitors had to compete in 48kg to 56.7kg catchweight, which actually encompassed three different weight classes. I think adding another weight class would encourage more women, especially the lighter weights, to try out. Ultimately, it will be up to MIMMA to decide.

Regardless of whether a new weight class is added, women have to do their part to take advantage of the opportunity and turn up for the MIMMA 4 tryouts to show the numbers are there to justify adding additional weight classes. I think there is definitely more interest and participation from female competitors in MMA, BJJ, muay thai, boxing and kickboxing competitions in Malaysia over the last couple of years, and the trend appears to be growing as more competitions are being held. MIMMA 3 has already unearthed some very good, promising female MMA fighters and I hope more women will come forward for MIMMA 4.

Defending it in 2016, what in your game that u feel need to improve on?
Plenty of things, especially the basics! Everything starts with a good foundation, so I will be spending a lot of time working on building good technique and unlearning bad habits. There is a very long way to go between where I am now and where I want to be.

Who contribute most in your preparations during MIMMA3 ?
It was really a team effort. I couldn't have done it without all my coaches and teammates from Studio 23 and SS Fighters. They gave a lot and sacrificed a lot to help me prepare. I am very blessed indeed to have them in my corner.

Backstage after her win with her coach Albert Lim ( right ) and friends

Now that you are not in competition mode, how is training like?
After the competition, I had to scale back my training so that I could concentrate on my job. Am gradually picking up the pace again. My main goal at the moment is to fully recover from an injury I got during training a couple of weeks back and also on getting enough rest and staying healthy. It's the flu and cough season in Kuching so there's a need to be extra careful as I'm planning to compete in a BJJ competition in KL in early January.

By becoming Female Champ, what is the thing you hope others will learn from this?
Firstly, I hope it will encourage the women who are already in martial arts and combat sports to continue to pursue their paths, and for those who are thinking of starting, to be bold to try something new. Women and girls have the right to be the mats and in the ring just as much as men and boys. Being a good fighter has very little to do with what gender you are.

Overall, I hope it will inspire more women to be more confident in expressing themselves and to do the things which give them joy no matter how old they are or what other people think – whether it's fulfilling a childhood dream like learning how to dance or trying something new which puts them out of their comfort zone. I think women tend to second-guess themselves a lot with reasons like “I'm too old”, “It's not practical”, “I'm not good enough”, “What will other people think”, etc. But if you don't try, you'll never find out if things will work out. You don't have to be exceptional to have permission to do what you enjoy and enjoy what you do. I am not a natural athlete, but competing in and getting better at martial arts is something which makes me happy and I think it would be a path I would be content to travel for the rest of my life. If I happen to get very good at it, it's just icing on the cake.

Will you be joining more MMA fights to keep active before MIMMA4 Grand Finals come? Do you see yourself turning Pro?
I don't have any plans yet to compete in MMA before the grand finals but I hope to be taking part in other martial arts competition to keep myself in the game mentally and physically.
As for whether I see myself turning pro, I'm open to the idea, but I think it's too early to say for sure. People forget I am still a relative newcomer to MMA in terms of training and fight experience. I would like to spend more time strengthening these two aspects first.

Does people recognise u in the street or during your work as reporter ?
So far, I don't think anyone has recognised me when I'm at my job (if they did, they didn't say anything to me, haha), but there have been a few people coming up to me during muay thai class at SS Fighters to offer their congratulations and to say how excited they are that the first MIMMA women's champion is from Sarawak. It's a lot of fun to hear them share how much their interest in Malaysian MMA have grown because of what they saw on TV1 and on the www.malaysianinvasion.com website. The MIMMA film and production crew led by Yi Kin Hong have really done a top-notch job of telling the human stories behind the fights and fighters, which has helped to raise public interest in MMA

Jace Law @ MIMMA3 Grand Final fight

Jace pix by YK Tang
After 3 trail blazing tryouts in Penang, Kota Kinabalu and Johor Bahru, MIMMA Tryouts is on its 4th stop coming this weekend 19-20 Mac 2016. Coming to Plaza Merdeka in Kuching, Sarawak. Sarawak is a treasure-trove for martial arts talent. In MIMMA Season 2 , Stephen Onn Jenggieng was the grand finalist for middleweight. Last year saw Sarawakian had a field day when 3 of them enter the grand finals of MIMMA3. Melvin Kho ( welterweight ), Joanna Yap ( female MMA ), Jace Law ( lightweight ). Joanna and Jace went home with the championship belt and if you count Ahmadjon Karimov of Tajikistan who studies in Kuching at that time winning the foreign pride championship belt, it shows that the spirit of the headhunters warriors are strong here.

One of the high lights of MIMMA3 Grand Finals was the lightweight fight of Jace Law vs Muhd Hasrul. Going against Hasrul, MIMMA Season 2 champion was certainly intimidating as Hasrul is known for his heavy hands, but Jace came into the fight with bombs of his own rights. The fight was a slugfest with Jace coming out victorious by knocking out Hasrul at the closing seconds of round 1.

Warriors of Borneo caught up with Jace to recall the eventful night in October 2015. Catch the video of the fight here. And you can read more about Jace’s from my previous posting

Pix by YK Tang

Tell me about the fight. What was in your thoughts stepping in the cage & looking at Hasrul across the cage?
Surprisingly, I wasn't nervous at all. My thoughts were basically telling myself "Wow! This is it! The big stage! Don't screw it up!"
My coach Matt Pellino telling me, “You got this!” helped boost my confidence even more coz he knows what he's talking about.
Pix by YK Tang

You initiated with a jab and immediately duck under his hard right, did you see that coming? Did that hit you?
I knew coming into this fight that I had to be cautious of his right hand. I think he caught me only once on my forehead. Other than that I pretty much controlled the fight with swift combos and footwork.

Pix by YK Tang

You hit him with two rights and the 2nd one floored him, did you practice that in training?
Yes I worked that combo a lot. My favorite counter against someone who's charging forward.

Did the lost in Jesselton Fight League 2015 fuel your desire to get the MIMMA belt?
Definitely! I still remember that night after the fight...my team mate Ahmadjon also lost his match and we were so down. We couldn't really sleep. I remember telling him we'll get those MIMMA belts. Fast forward a few months... Jon and I are MIMMA champions. It all worked out as planned.

Pix by YK Tang

So what is next after achieving the MIMMA3 glory?
Can't really say for now. I'm keeping my options open.

How did you celebrate the win?
Sleep! Fight week leading up to the fight was exhausting to say the least!

Looking at ONE Championship: Tigers of Asia ( OCT 2015 ) the night before MIMMA3 grand Finals, where Peter Davis & Ann Osman got KOed by foreigner, do you think we Malaysian are on par with them?
Yes of course. Malaysian fighters have come a long way. Everyone suffers a loss once in awhile, the important thing is to bounce back from it and come back stronger!

How do you train for the knockout power of JKO? ( what type of strenght & conditioning do you do to get this?
Its all in the hip ;)

Pix by YK Tang

Have you got any offer yet from other MMA promotions to fight Pro?
Can't say that I have.

What do you think of the overall quality of fights in the MIMMA3 Grand Finals?
Most of the fights were good. My personal favorite was Gino vs Melvin ( welterweight ). Nobody knows how close these 2 have become with each other since our training in Tiger Muaythai Phuket. The sportsmanship was awesome to see from both sides. They are funny guys outside, but warriors in the cage.

What's your opinion on the No-Contest decision for the Bantamweight fight?
Well it is what it is. We gotta respect the decision of the MIMMA officials and judges.

Finally who do you wanna thank for the win
Gymbox, Sean Wong. Coach Matt Pellino, Muay Thai Trainer Ncedo Gomba, S&C Trainer / Team Mate Stephen Onn, my fight team Aaron Lo, Melvin Kho, Tsan Nieng Khai, Ahmadjon Karimov and Aaron Tan. A few Gymbox Fight Club members who helped me during my training camps. My family especially my mom, my friends and last but not least my girlfriend who's always been there for me.

Jace's team mates from Gymbox will be at the tryouts, at Plaza Merdeka Kuching this 19-29 Mac,to make an impact.

Jace Law himself will be there too to encourage and motivate new comers at the tryouts.
Catch him with his shiny MIMMA3 Lightweight champion belt.

Come STAND with me

The sun is setting and its ray strike your face but you are not bothered coz you got your shades on. Breeze from South China Sea sweeps your hair as the smells of smoked meat aroused your appetite. Hand on a cold drink, you move your feet on the soft, loose sands as your hearts thumps to the beats from a 3ft speaker. As the sky turns darks,… the sound of bell ring and the crowds roar to life as the attention shifts towards a ring where two warriors are throwing bombs at each other.

Where is this you ask? Phuket? Bali? No people…it’s K.K. (Kota Kinabalu)! Yup, right here in the heart of Sabah Borneo. Bringing to you … STAND. A new concept of fight event in Malaysia, where it will combine the action of boxing and Kickboxing with the excitement of a beach party.

STAND will happen on 22-24 April at the stunning resort of NEXUS Karambunai, just ½ hour drive from KK. This award winning beach resort that has seen many international functions being held at it’s sprawling 65 acres beachfront landscape. When STAND happens there this April it will be the 1st fight event with a beach party concept in Malaysia.

STAND will feature amateur boxing and K1 Kickboxing. Co-organised by 2 of Sabah’s top martial arts gym, namely; Team Karabaw and Keningau MMA (KMMA), with the collaboration with Kaza Musa Fight management .

According to Rayner Kinsiong (Team Karabaw’s founder cum STAND’s event director) STAND will feature boxing & K1 Kickboxing matches. Both at amateur level. Rayner sees that boxing is the least promoted fight sports in Sabah currently and he hopes STAND can be a platform for amateur boxer to build their fight experience. As for K1 Kickboxing, it may not be as well known as Muaythai in Sabah but it’s an upcoming martial sports that is gaining popularity due to its fast pace action.

STAND will open up lots of category for boxing & kickboxing and will be held over 3 days. For K1 Kickboxing 11 category for men and 5 for women will be competed. Meanwhile boxing will have 10 category for men & 3 for women. Day 1 will be registration, weighing in and photo shoot for fighters and team. Day 2 will see fights for all preliminary rounds and day 3 will feature finals rounds to determine the champion. Winners will be bringing back cash prizes and medals.

Fight Five is the sponsor for fight gear. This is a new high quality local Malaysian brand and it will be making its debut in a fight event at STAND. Fight Five apparel will also be available soon, with fantastic design from New York designer....witness it for yourself at STAND.

The organizer is looking forward to large participations by team. For their convenience of accommodation, venue sponsors NEXUS Karambunai is giving a special rate of RM288 per night for any team. Team with most medals collected will get to bring home a big a$$ challenge trophy!

The organizers hope to bring great fight action in the ring to entertain fight fans but around the ring too will be many entertaining activities. Auto and bike show has been planned to satisfied motor-heads. Food and drinks will also be available with a menu focus on BBQ dishes. And of course, DJ’s will be in the house to spin you all the entertaining beats.

STAND’s fight night beach party is inspired by BBQ Beatdown organized monthly by Tiger Muay Thai (TMT) in Phuket. TMT is the No.1 fight gym in Thailand and has produced many top fighters in Muaythai & MMA. Foreigners from around the globe especially westerners flock to TMT as the training is facilities is top notch, great trainers and also the lure of the beach party. Even in Bali now a few fight gym has been set up as they see the success of Phuket drawing in serious fighters and also lots of casual fighters and fitness enthusiast.

STAND wants to replicate the mood in BBQ Beatdown, where fighters can fight and build their fight experience, at the same time his team can stay at the resort for a weekend getaway. Casual fight fans can enjoy watching fights and enjoy a beach party at the same time.

This could be a potential new segment for tourism in Sabah. Rayner was one of the trainer in Amazing Borneo package of tour for Sabah where tourist can come & enjoy the many outdoor adventure activities in Sabah such as climbing Mt Kinabalu, water rafting, scuba diving, jungle trekking and they add in training with ONE Championship fighters which include AJ Pyro and Ann Osman. With this concept from STAND,
I believe Sabah can also be successful in fight tourism. We have great beautiful beaches and resorts in Sabah. Bringing the fights to these amazing places and throw in a great party, this could be a great recipe to boost tourism in Sabah.

Let's get to know the sponsors, giving them the support as without their support we will not be able to watch STAND for free.

STAND is brought to us by Borneo MajuBina ( BMB ). BMB has been strong supporter of martial arts event. BMB also help support JFL and Team Karabaw grand participation in Ultimate Beatdown 17 in Johor Bahru. Warriors of Borneo had a quick chat with Hisham Michael, the CEO of Borneo Majubina.

May I know your role in Borneo MajuBina (BMB)
I am one of three directors in the company. The other two is Aidil Zakuan and Mustaqim.

BMB play a big role in Team Karabaw & JFL...why does BMB chooses to support martial arts?
Me and Rayner Kinsiong used to go way back to the good old Karate days where we used to compete along side in State and National events. Martial arts gave me the proper structure to be the person I am today. And I'd like to give the younger generations an opportunity to build their character whether competing in this sport or in fighting for their career in the same way Karate has given me the opportunity too.

What is BMB's main business? Can you please give the readers some background on BMB?
BMB is actually a construction company, we've been around since 2011. Our aim is to give our clients the best in comfort and ease that our projects are completed in the best possible manner whether it is a school project, government quarters, government offices etc. Our second aim is to bring up young locals that are interested to pursue their career in the construction industry by giving them the opportunity to handle every aspects of this very tough market.

What do you hope to achieve through STAND?
The same way we in BMB are giving the opportunity to young locals to pursue their career in the construction industry, the same way we hope to achieve in the martial arts industry. We hope to be a part of building our younger generations that will eventually be an asset to our society.

When did the idea for a beach party and fights came about?
My team and Rayner had a discussion at a mamak shop in 88 Market in Kepayan. The best ideas come out of teh tarik and roti canai session. We were discussing on how for us to make it interesting enough for the younger crowds to get involved in martial arts, hence the beach party theme event came about.

ELITEZ MMA is also a sponsors for STAND. ELITEZ MMA is the 1st MMA gym in Klang Selangor. It is headed by Andy 'The Bullet' Teh, a pro MMA fighter and recently starred in local chinese movie FIST of PASSION. Sabahan Effendy Kalai & Eddey Kalai of The Kalai Borthers Boxing is also a part of ELITEZ MMA team of coaches.

Andy Teh with the Kalai Brothers

Another sponsors is from the interior of Sabah, Keningau, the land of the legendary Murut warriors. This is where Keningau MMA ( KMMA ) is located. Headed by it's head coach Mohd Bakri, KMMA has produced a JFL bantamweight Champion 2015 in Mohd Hasbullah Sanmin. Find out more on KMMA in my previous posting here.

WARRIORS OF BORNEO supports STAND as a pioneer in fight tourism, fight fans let’s support this together and make it a success. Come and enjoy great fights and good food. Entrance is FREE!
This possibly is a first step for Sabah to be on the map for fight tourism. Let’s have fun and create history!

Check out STAND's Facebook for further updates, or call Rayner Kinsiong 013-888 8379 for further infor.

Catch up with Adrian 'Tuckman' Tham

Ahead of MIMMA4 Tryouts at Kota Kinabalu this weekend, 5-6 Mac 2016 at 1 Borneo Hypermall, Warriors of Borneo had a catch up with KK hometown boy, Adrian 'Tuckman' Tham. The 2013 MIMMA Heavyweight Champion.

I hope with the sharing of Adrian's story and experience can motivate and inspire more Sabahan or Borneon in general to step up to the tryouts and fight their hearts out to be the next MIMMA Champion. Click this link to can catch the earlier story I did on Adrian.

2015 was a busy fight year for Adrian. He participated in K1 rules Kickboxing in Fight Fest: Kings of Kings in April 2015. Winning the fight against a Muaythai specialist, Banetto Bain.

In the Sabah based Jesselton Fight League's (JFL) tournament, 'Tuckman' dominated Welterweight category with 100% finishes in all his fights and crowned as the inaugural JFL Welterweight Champion in 4 OCT 2015.
On his way to become JFL Welterweight Champion 2015...win via Rear Naked Choke

He capped off his 2015 with a Superfight of East Malaysia meet West Malaysia at MIMMA3 Grand Finals in 10 Oct 2015. His opponent was Theeban Govindasamy. That fight was Adrian's toughest to date but also a memorable fight to kick start a night full of actions for MIMMA3 Grand Finals.
True martial artist...respect your opponent. pix credit to PugillPix

Theeban is an ex National Karateka with an amateur record of 3-2. Adrian started training in Taekwondo ever since primary schools. Picking up BJJ in 2010, his skills grew and he became an expert in grappling.

In the fight Adrian's experience and skills on the ground was quite obvious and he gained cage control with them but Theeban's striking skills cannot be dismissed. These skills, leveraging his height advantage, his quick transitions on the ground and his takedown defence were commendable. The 3 round fight was won by Adrian.

Warriors of Borneo found out more on the fight...

Your fight vs Theeban, was a close fight. But you managed to win by dominating the ground game....were you happy with your stand up?
It was definitely a close one as Theeban did a really good job in keeping the distance between us nor did he actually commit to stand and bang with me. I didn't really get to strike with him, so honestly I don't really know how my striking would've fair to his. But overall, I felt I did not bring my 'A' game with me.

His range seems to bother you a bit till you close the distance, does fighting a taller foe a challenge for you?
It's always a challenge to fight almost everyone in the cage and given his advantage of being tall and lanky does pose a difficulty to me.

You have dominated all your MMA fight in JFL. In fact finding an opponent for you was rather difficult. Most of it end in first round. Do you find going the distance a big test to your endurance? Or was your cold/flu affecting you during the fight?
Endurance was never a problem for me. I had a problem breathing for most of the period of the fight cause I was coughing a lot due to the haze and having a sensitize nose worsen the problem.

What was going through your mind after the 1st round ended?
I did whatever I need to do in the first round and I need to step things up if I really wanted to win and I did really want to get the W.

Do you feel accepting the fight vs Theeban was too short a notice?
I didn't get to study my opponent as there were changes between 3-4 opponents but it wasn't an issue.

Who help you most in your preparation in facing Theeban?
I was lucky to have Azrin Kadri to work on my striking and padding and I have Team NOMAD and Alpha MMA evening crew helping me with grappling. It's good to be a part of Team Checkmat/BJJ Borneo.

What do you think of 2015 MIMMA's fighter? What is the difference compare to 2013 when you first fought?
The difference between now and back then is that the MMA standards had really improved a lot since then. Most of the fighters are all rounder rather than being one dimensional.

Which fighter in MIMMA3 impress you most in 2015?
Most of them were very impressive but Aiman and Jace were on a different level entirely.

ONE Championship: Tigers of Asia, the night before MIMMA3, how does it make you feel watching two fan favourite, fellow Malaysian, Peter and Ann got knock out with punches?
I always believe you can't win me all. You win some and sometimes you lose some. Its how they will come back from it that is more important. So it doesn't really bother me much. That's what a fighter go through day in day out. What I despise is how people nowadays are very quick to comment on a fighters performance or result and I find that it is really not fair as they do not really understand how hard is it to prep for a fight.

So what is your plan after this fight? You have won 2 title in amateur MMA ( MIMMA & JFL ) are u looking to build up more records in amateur level?
I don't really have any plans yet but I'm seriously considering to go pro. We'll see how it goes.

Thank You for your time Adrian.

Warriors of Borneo hopes to see more fight from Adrian. Catch him at 1 Borneo Hypermall on 5-6 MAC, MIMMA4 Tryouts.
