MOSTAFA ASHOURI vs ALEX LIM : ISKA BMAEX 85kgs title fight

MOSTAFA ASHOURI vs ALEX LIM : ISKA BMAEX 85kgs title fight.

This fight at 85kgs almost didn't see the light of day. Mostafa's original opponent, Chong Jing Yi ( MIMMA season 1 middleweight Champion), got injured two weeks earlier.

Organiser frantically look for a replacement but no one would dare stepped up at short notice to face Mostafa. But we are thankful that a warrior hearted Alex Lim accepted the offer in less than 10 days notice!

Standing at 178cm tall and at the age of 34, hailing from Iran,  the blood of Persian warrior run in Mostafa Ashouri. He has an astonishing record of more than 172 fights with 130 wins. Nick name White Scorpion he has a menacing looking scorpion tatooed at his back.

He started training in martial arts since 9 years old and is a 24 times Iranian Champion in various styles, ie: Kung Fu,  Kyokushin Karate, Full Contact Karate, Muaythai, Kickboxing, Arts of commando fighting.

In 2006 he became a silver medalist world championship in Chinese kickboxing (Choy Li Fut). He is currently based in Kuala Lumpur and has been very active in the regional combat sports scene.

Alex Lim may not possessed the menacing look of a assassin but at 42 he is a true pioneer of Malaysian martial arts.

He has participated in numerous competition (Muaythai/Kickboxing/Sanda/Western Boxing/MMA): with a record of approximately 60 Pro Fights - 50% Wins - 50% Losses - 50% KOs

Along the way collecting many significant battles and below are some of the titles and his achievements:

He also fought MMA when ONE Championship signed him for a bout in 2013, with an MMA record of 1-3-0, it was a testing ground for Alex as he does not back down from a good fight and always wanted to test himself in different situation.

Alex is not a full time fighter, he used to work in a big corporation in the export division, hence has travel internationally a lot. He still finds time to train & keep himself fighting fit at 42.
When he is not tied down to work, he would look for fights to compete in. This is his way of always keeping himself mentally sharp & physically fit.

Being a pioneer in Malaysian combat sports scene certainly gives Alex a large network of friends and knowing that BMAEX founder Alvin Chong was looking for a fighter to replace Jing Yi, Alex decides to stepped up even though on very short notice.

He has been itching to fight after tasting sweet victory in the 1st BMAEX last year when he fought against a young fighter from Tawau.

Representing LLS, TNT, GEG & Titans Alex likes to be among his friends in the martial arts circle and to him coming to this 2nd BMAEX is also a time to catch up and support his friends, but Alex also has his eye on the ISKA BMAEX belt and will surely give Mostafa a good fight for the title.

GRAND MERDEKA SUPER FIGHT FULL RESULTS

Last weekend was a triple whammy. The weekend of 25-26 August, saw the actions of  KK Int BJJ, Malaysian Fight Fest (in KL) and Grand Merdeka Super Fight. I had to cover 3 martial arts event, but I can only be at one physically.

But organising chairman, Johan Julian Lee Abdullah, kept me up to speed on the going ons at the event.

It was two days of action that happened at KK's latest mall - Grand Merdeka. Located around 30 mins drive from KK. It's good to see local mall coming forward to become venue sponsor for combat sports event. Knowing that combat sports event bring crowds. The participants, their team mates, supporters and families present a ready customers for their mall.

Grand Merdeka Super Fight also became an avenue for development of new talent. 1st day saw junior age kickboxers compete. Out of the 80 participants, half of them are participants in the kids & teens category which fought in 21 bouts.

On the 2nd day, adults category were held. 20 bouts were competed, 2 being the semi-pro title fight.

The event saw the participation of 14 teams + 3 independent fighters collected medals
D' Sha Muaythai from Tawau emerge overall champion with 7 champion & 3 runners-up medals.

Below is the results for the day 2 (adults category) :

Bout 1 -10

Bout 11-20

D'Sha Muaythai Team  - overall champion

On Day 1, saw MIMMA 5 Lightweight champion, Nathaniel Lakai of Warmonger Miri in action vs Kyo Kaede, former Muaythai champion whom is making a comeback in combat sports. This fight was specially arrange as the last fight on 25 August, which enabled Nathaniel to compete in KK Int. BJJ on 26 Aug.

It was in the class B catgeory (for fighter with 3 or more fight experience). It was a slow start as both feel out each other in the first round, but in later rounds, Nathaniel found his timing for good powerful combos, which saw an uppercut that put Kyo in an 8 count. Nathaniel won the bout via unanimous decision.

Johan Julian wants to give shout out to coach Sharon Andrea Gerald of D'SHA MUAYTHAI , whom sent a huge contingent of kids & teens to participate.

Also to coach Dhillon Tahing of REVOLUTION GYM whom brought athlete from SMK Pulau Gaya. Coming all the way from the island to Grand Merdeka mall. Even their school principal & vice principal came to support.

This is good for the development of combat sports, to have committed coaches who sacrifice their time & effort to coach & guide youngsters and encourage them to participate in competition to enable them to grow their skills further & develop sportsmanship & camaraderie among other combat sports athletes.

Some feedback Julian received is on the results which some coaches felt was unsatisfactory. Julian said he understood their feelings and is certainly something he would look into. But he hopes the coaches & their team understand that the organiser does not have any influence over the results.

As an ISKA sanctioned event, certified ISKA judges and referees are in charge of the decision. The referees and judges are separate from the organising team and organiser follow by the results given by them.

Moving forward, Julian said some gym need to pay attention on their fighters registering but was a no show. He advise that gym should be more responsible for this and have better planning.

FIGHT FEST 4: THE ART OF COMBAT FULL RESULTS

The iconic mall of Centre Point Sabah was crowded with enthusiastic spectators on 7-8 October 2017. All of them glued their eyes and focus their attention on the Muaythai ring of Fight Fest.
Fight Fest returned with it's 4th edition and again wowed the crowds with plenty of martial arts action and activities.

Event founder Johan Julian again pointed out that Fight Fest continue to work with public mall where there are ready crowds for two reasons;
1st - to give more exposure of different type of martial arts to the masses, so that their interest will be sparked and may take up classes at the different martial arts gym in Sabah which in return will grow the industry.
2nd reason; that usually fighters will be supported by family and friends, and these group of people can in return bring business to the mall. Hence a win win situation for both parties.

For Day 1 ( 7 October ), Novice Muaythai tournament was organised. More than 50 participants took part. This tournament was organised together with Persatuan Muaythai Daerah Kota Kinabalu, with the sole purpose of unearthing more new Muaythai talents for Sabah.

Sabah have numerous Muaythai gym and for those that has taken up Muaythai and have been training hard, the only way to gauge what they have learnt is to test it out in the competition ring, hence the effort to organise this tournament, to enable newcomer to put into action what the months of practice they have gone through.

Kids Muaythai was also competed, but for Fight Fest, Julian's said the kids Muaythai is more of an exhibition match to give exposure for the participants. All fighters for kids Muaythai was awarded gold medals to give them motivation and encouragement.

Next to the Muaythai ring, grappling mat was set up for BJJ & Mata Leao Submission Grappling. This was oversee by the Brazilian Luta Livre Asia Pacific Union led by Antonio Battistessa and Persatuan BJJ Negeri Sabah led by Soh.

Day 2 saw the Mata Leao No-Gi Submmission grappling held. 2 category was competed. White belt Absolute & Blue/Purple Belt Absolute.

In the White belt category, emerging talent from Borneo Tribal Sq, Alexander Fong emerged as the Champion. This victory was sweet for him as he enter the category as the lightest and smallest of all the competitor.

Mata Leao Submission Grappling continued with the Blue /Purple Belt category. Eazy Anuar of Brunei dominated and took home the coveted Fight Fest : Mata Leao Title Belt.
It was certainly memorable victory as this came from overcoming a pool of very accomplished grapplers.
In the category saw MIMMA 3 Semi-finalist & JFL 2015 finalist Samuel Lai from Borneo Tribal Sq returned back to competition after a long hiatus. Team Relentless India founder former Judoka Jitendre Khare and his team mate Susovan Ghosh also competed.

Eazy representing Walid Brothers is a former Brunei national team rugby player who took up BJJ to supplement his rugby training many years back and it became his no.1 passion. Leading the Team Bussido in Brunei, Eazy and team actively participate in numerous BJJ / Grappling tournament around Asia, and always brought back good results home.

Eazy most recently in August represented Brunei to the IBJJF World Masters in Las Vegas and reached the quarter finals in a stacked category of  62 athletes from all over the world.
