ULTIMATE BEATDOWN BORNEO FEATURING RYAN FELTNER

Redemption. It’s on Ryan Feltner’s mind. He wants to wipe off the horrible lost in FMD 13 last year. It was a 5 second lost via TKO. Ever since then, American Ryan ‘Bodat’ Feltner has been focusing on training to get better and seek a fight to erase that nightmare in Bangkok.

Come 12 May, he will have his chance. Ryan will be featured in the main card for ULTIMATE BEATDOWN 28 : BORNEO. He will be fighting pro at middleweight against local Malaysian from Sabah pro debutant Mike Sidis.

------------#WRB-------------

At 29 years old, Ryan has 4 MMA fights experience. 1-1 at pro. But his journey began when he was very young. At 8 years old struggling to focus on his studies and getting bullied regularly, his aunt signed him up for Taekwondo classes.

When he turned 11 he moved from Arkansas in the south to Michigan in the north, but things didn't gets better. The bullying got worse, mainly because southerners speak a different slang than northerners.

It was on a fateful day in a playground that 7 older kids jump him. Ryan did not concede defeat, he fought back even though the odds was against him. He managed to knocked out 3 of them before he was taken to the ground as they kicked and stomped on him. It was fated that the teacher on duty that day, Mr. Hutchinson saw what happened and came to break off the fight and chase the delinquent away.

He sat Ryan up and asked whether he was okay. He said Ryan was really tough and brave but that he need to learn control. Turned out that Mr Hutchinson was the school’s wrestling coach. From then on he joined the after school Wrestling Club program, in which he gets to train with the high school wrestlers.

“ I'll never forget the act of kindness and understanding that coach Hutchinson showed me. It paved a way for me to become a better person.”

Ryan didn’t compete in wrestling when he was in Michigan because he started at a considerably late age compare to others in Michigan where they train at a very early age and the local competition circuit is very high level at his age group. But the exposure and the chance to be able to train with other athletes gave him a good foundation in martial arts.

Ever since then Ryan has trained in American Kenpo (considered as one of the first MMA systems introduced to North America consists of Goju-Ryu Karate, Chinese kenpo and Judo.) He has also started training in BJJ 3 years ago along with Muaythai, Sanda and western boxing.

Jobs opportunity was tough back then and he being a person with high principle and an independent attitude, Ryan at one time was homeless and live out of his truck. He even experience rummaging through garbage bin for food just because he does not want to beg for food.

Making a huge decision one day to just leave America and use whatever little money he has, he board a flight to Malaysia. Seeing that Malaysia MMA scene is growing, Ryan felt that he found a place close to his heart, he found a place to develop his art and also to contribute his knowledge to the local Malaysian combat sports. It is also a place that he found love, where he met his wife from Penang.

--------------#WRB--------------

He is now a certified personal trainer and specialize in nutrition and rehabilitation. He is currently training at Batam Fighter Club with 70kg Indonesian One Pride MMA Champion Jeka Saragih.

Recently Ryan travelled to the north eastern part of Thailand ( the Issan province close the the Lap border). It is where many Thais start their careers as Thai boxers. The training here is more raw and hardcore but not many gyms here openly accept foreigners. He search around and was rejected by all until finally he found Kru Kreed.

Ryan considered the experience with Kru Kreed as the best striking coach he ever had.
“He said I can kick and punch but I'm not using any technique. So he started me from very basic training and in my one month my technique got better than from a year of training anywhere else.
But it was not easy. The training was very hardcore and intense. My legs was bruised and battered so bad, I could hardly walk.”

But it was a no pain, no gain journey for Ryan. He felt his striking improve leaps and bounds.

Ryan is looking to showcase what he has learn from Thailand on Saturday night, combining his improved striking with his strong grappling.

-----------#WRB-----------------

On his fight with Mike Sidis,
“It's a classic match-up between striker and grappler. I have worked extensively on my submissions and to refine my stand-up techniques.
I understand that my opponent is a kickboxer. You never want to underestimate someone but I've watched his tape and I'm not really impressed with his stand-up skills.
I am confident of victory. I feel I'm more athletic and more experienced and more well-rounded. I have the ability to take the fight to the ground and keep it there. Fighting against a strong wrestler is completely different than a BJJ guy. There's nothing more embarrassing than getting thrown like a child and being held on the ground knowing you can't get back up."

Ryan says that he believe that people are underestimating him quite a lot because they are judging his ability based on his last fight, the 5 second loss in FMD 13. He does not mind being the underdog. It gives him more motivation to proof them wrong.

MIMMA 5 Grand Finals : EUNICE ONG MAKING SURE THE WOMEN BELT STAYS IN JOHOR

MMA is predominantly a male sports, more so in Malaysia. But Sabahan Ann 'Athena' Osman came & broke that stereotype 5 years ago, being the first Malaysian female Muslim MMA athlete.

Ann became the face of Malaysian female MMA. She was a true ambassador of the sports with her fighting prowess, personality and her media savyness. She inspired many women not just to take up MMA but to be more affirmative & confident.

In 2015 MIMMA decided to introduce the female category as there were already a good healthy number of female MMA prospects and journalist Joanna Yap of Sarawak became the inaugural champion.

Ann announced her retirement last year. With her departure from active fighting, Jihin Radzuan from Johor filled in the void. Jihin was the 2nd MIMMA female champion in 2016. Undefeated in amateur MMA and multiple champion in Kickboxing & Muaythai. This year Jihin has moved up to become a pro fighter under ONE Championship.

Jihin herself, in turn inspired another female to take up MMA. Also from Johor, her name is Eunice Ong.

---------------------

Eunice qualified for MIMMA season 5 grand finals on Friday when she beat Amirah Najwa of KL with a split decision in the semi-finals. Going into the semis, Eunice was the leader of the pack in MIMMA5 league standings with 24 points.

This petite girl from Batu Pahat has a background in Wushu. She was Johor state champion for NanQuan, NanKun & Nanbao, and a silver medalist in national championship for NanQuan.

Eunice ( middle )

In primary school, TaeKwon-Do gave her some martial arts foundation. In her secondary school time in Chinese High School, she was active in Ping-Pong and Wushu. After high school Eunice attended Beijing Sports University. She studied sport science with focus on Wushu.

While studying in Uni as she study Wushu, inevitably she learn about MMA. Her interest grew in MMA and when she was back for holiday she began looking for an MMA gym. But no such place exist back in her home town. Mr Google came to her rescue and she managed to locate Ultimate MMA Academy (UMA) in Johor Bahru.

UMA is a pioneer MMA gym in Malaysia. Founded by non other than Malaysian pioneer himself a high school teacher name Melvin Yeoh. She and her husband took up lessons and Melvin shared his knowledge with her. Training together with Jihin, Eunice began to dream of success in MMA and wanting to win a championship belt too.

with her coach and mentor in MMA Melvin Yeoh

Back home in Batu Pahat, Eunice and her husband Golden Tan founded QYS Wushu Academy. Teaching Wushu and self defense to mostly children.

As she progress her learning in MMA from Melvin in her weekend 100 over KM drive down to Johor Bahru, she started to teach MMA in QYS, making QYS a affiliated gym of UMA in Batu Pahat.

with her husband Golden Tan

"It's not easy. Batu Pahat is a chinese populated town. Most chinese parents do not mind their children learning Wushu as it's steeped with tradition and the art form is easily appreciated.

But not MMA... as Chinese parents does not like their children to get hit on the face. Furthermore, MMA in Batu Pahat is still new. Most people's perception of it is that its a brutal sports taken up by rough-lings, and most are very uncomfortable in the grappling style of BJJ"

"So some started taking MMA classes only out of curiosity, but the drop off rate is high."

Building the young generation of Batu Pahat

---------------------------------

In the grand finals she will face Gloria Isabelle Hoong of Sabah. She knew that Gloria has good grappling and being the lightest among the female in her weigh division, she had to work harder on the ground. Which is why Eunice is happy that she gets lots of valuable pointers from Jihin. Eunice and her husband has made more regular trip to UMA to further enhance her game plan form mentor Melvin.

Aside from running QYS Wushu Academy Eunice and her husband Golden Tan's also is the founder of Motion Art , a sportswear clothing brand with design on sports lifestyle and martial arts. Martial arts is their main source of income.

Eunice and Golden in their Motion Art t-shirt

"I join MIMMA 5 not only to win the belt, but at the same time to promote MMA in Batu Pahat. I hope my achievement can bring more awareness and in turn will encourage parents to send their kids to learn martial arts."

All the preparation is now all done. It's fight night, time for action. Eunice is determine to get that Women belt and she wants to make sure the belt remains in the royal land of Johor.

Ultimate Beatdown 24 is set to take place tonight at their iconic location of rooftop of Plaza Sentosa Johor Bahru; hence the name Rooftop Duel for this edition.

This is their third show for the year. UB will close the year with a bang in Nov when they move location to Medini Mall.

As for this 24th edition, a really packed card of amateur fight has been planned. 17 Boxing, 17 Kickboxing and 20 MMA, bringing it to a total of 54 bouts! from as many as 14 countries competing.

Astounding numbers indeed, but in their 23th edition, UB hit a high of over 60 bouts, which drag the show to 1.30am. Amazingly the crowds stayed through the whole night to catch the main event where Johorian home grown MIMMA 4 women champion Jihin Radzuan took home the victory in her 1st pro MMA fight vs Masrina Hamka of Indonesia.

Jihin securing her first pro MMA win in UB23

This goes to show the amazing support UB received from it's fans. What started as a competition among MMA practitioner to improve on each other's skills in the early days of MMA in Malaysia way back in 2008 has now achieved legendary status as the pioneering MMA promotions in the region and the longest running promotions in Malaysia.

check out the UB t-shirt for sale at event ground, only the Tshirt available ya, not the girl, not the sword or the cat, those are taken

UB is founded by the pioneer of Malaysian MMA, a school teacher name Melvin Yeoh. He himself self taught and learnt through trial and errors and became a ONE Championship pro MMA fighters. Achieving success in the cage and gave Sabahan AJ Pyro a great fight for the ONE Championship Malaysian National Featherweight Belt in 2013.

Also through his own effort and passion to grow the sports he got together his team to organised UB, slowly improving it show after show. Through the UB metal cage, many local MMA fighters has gain valuable experience and some have progress to the bigger stage. Melvin also happily shared his experience and guidance and inspired Rayner Kinsiong to start Jesselton Fight League in Sabah.

Melvin's effort to bring MMA to the forefront of Malaysia has definately shown results as there's no difficulties to look for fighters to fight in UB. The grassroots is the future of MMA. By pitting local Malaysians with international fighters also can push the level of standard for us.

Even Victor Cui ( the CEO of ONE Championship ) made an appearance in 2013 in a UB event, perhaps to scout for new talents for his organisation.

Aaron Lo in action during UB 23

Tonight's edition will see the main event of Aaron Lo vs Shihab Mustafi from Liberia for the Bantamweight Title.

Aaron a practicing accountant from Kuching Sarawak is a product of UB itself, fought first time in 2015 in UB 18, Aaron fought four times in UB, kept improving from fight to fight and is currently undefeated in UB. Which qualify him now to fight for a title belt.

Aaron started his MMA journey in GymBox Kuching, under head coach Matt Pellino. Matt has since left and worked in Hong Kong, but Aaron and his team mates still continue training on their own. Most of the time he trains with Jace Law, MIMMA 4 Lightweight champion.

Even without a head coach, the one that kept him going is the desire to fight and to test himself in the cage. Aaron does not see MMA as a career but as an outlet to release stress and to constantly push himself to improve on his techniques. It gives him satisfaction seeing the techniques he learnt and drill worked in the cage.

Aaron last fight was just a month ago in Penang's Golden Warriors FC. Defeating a fellow Borneon by KO in the 1:56 of the first round.

Judge Aaron unassuming apperance at your own peril...

As for Shihab, this is his 3rd fight in Malaysia. Last year his win over Hao Ting Ng with a spinning tornado kick KO became viral in the internet. But his last fight in July in UB 23 was a lost to Manthane Rane of India, so this is Shihab's redemption to collect a win and the title at the same time.

Two more representative from Borneo, Ian Sua and Edwin Aping of Team Karabaw will also be featured in the MMA cards. Ian will face Hajrah Hazwan of Lekir MMA for Bantamweight 61kg meanwhile Edwin to fight Ariff Aiman of Kelab Muay Thai Singa Muda in flyweight 57kg.

Warriors of Borneo wishes all the Borneo fighters the best of luck!
